2023 Scholarship Winners

Posted by Shara - January 2, 2024 - News, Scholarship

The Canadian Technical Asphalt Association is proud to offer three scholarships for students pursuing careers in Asphalt technology. Application information were sent to over 50 universities and colleges in the Spring of 2023.  Twenty-five applicants were received. Information regarding our scholarships, eligibility and the application process can be viewed on our website. Members are asked to pass this information on to students they know or meet who are studying asphalt technology at the graduate, undergraduate or college level.

For the 2023 Scholarship, the deadline this year was moved to early September to allow for students returning to classes to be more aware of it availability.  This year 25 candidates competed for the three available scholarships.  The winners all provided a brief statement of the impact the scholarship will have as they continue their studies.

Meet the Winners

Christopher McCarthy
Applied Technology Scholarship
College of the North Atlantic

“I wish to express my gratitude for awarding me the 2023 Applied Science Scholarship. I am very fortunate to have been chosen as recipient of this award.

I am currently a second year Civil Engineering Technology student at College of the North Atlantic in St. John’s Newfoundland. After working in the asphalt industry for many years, I decided to return to school. This can be a daunting task as a mature student; however, your financial assistance will help ease some of the stress and assist in my studies.

After graduation I plan to work in the asphalt industry and bring forth a new set of skills, knowledge, and experience. All of this made possible in part because of your association. Thank you to the CTAA and their support of students.”

Natalie Lee
Undergraduate Scholarship
University of New Brunswick

“I would like to express my extreme gratitude to CTAA for awarding me the 2023 Undergraduate Scholarship. This scholarship will allow me to spend additional time on my studies, as well as my undergraduate research thesis titled, The Performance of High RAP Mixes.

I have worked with asphalt for several years as a professional technologist, the last two with the New Brunswick Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, and I know I have found my passion. Thanks to CTAA a large financial responsibility has been lifted, which will permit me to thoroughly enjoy this exciting last year of my bachelor’s degree.”

Diana Marcela Aparicio Gutierrez
Graduate Scholarship
University of Calgary

“As a graduate student at the Bituminous Materials Chair, Schulich School of Engineering, U of C I would like to express my deepest gratitude for selecting me as the winner of the CTAA Graduate Scholarship 2023. As a civil engineer with a passion for asphalt technologies, attending my master’s degree at the University of Calgary is the first step towards becoming an expert in my field. My research efforts are currently focused on the formulation of paving mixes with high RAP content with the addition of an active rejuvenator and straight-run asphalt to obtain high performance and longevity of the pavements.

Receiving the prestigious CTAA Graduate Scholarship serves as a vote of confidence in me to work even harder to help academic, industrial and government bodies to advance in asphalt recycling technologies. It confirms that sustainable pavements are no longer optional but imperative around asphalt-related technologies, in accordance with the challenges our society faces.

Once again, I thank you for your financial investment and the long-term impact this scholarship will have on my life goals.”
