AWARDS / SCHOLARSHIPS

Each year, during the Annual conference, the Canadian Technical Asphalt Association recognizes authors and presenters with specific awards. Beginning in 2006, CTAA will recognize students thru a scholarship program. See below for more information

  • Winners of the Elaine Thompson  Award

    The Elaine Thompson Award is given to any author(s) as an appreciation of excellence in the written presentation of the submitted paper. The Editor evaluates the paper with specific guidelines and criteria and selects a winner.
     
  • Winners of the Norman W. McLeod Award

    The Norman W. McLeod Award is given to a presenter for their excellence in oral presentation. The Award winner is selected by participants at the annual CTAA conference by a confidential voting process.
     
  • Winners of the Earl Kee Award

    The Earl Kee Award is for the best paper presented by a new author. The definition of a 'new author' will be taken to mean documented author of the subject paper who is making their first oral presentation at the Annual CTAA Conference. To qualify for the Award, the new presenter shall complete the entire presentation. The Selection Committee consists of 3 members at large appointed by the Board of Directors.
     

The CTAA Scholarship

Purpose:

The CTAA Scholarships are funded by the Canadian Technical Asphalt Association to support students preparing for careers as scientists, technologists or engineers in the general area of asphalt paving technology.

Eligibility Requirements:

The CTAA Scholarships will be presented to students who have been admitted into, or are currently enrolled in, a technical college or a university program leading to either a diploma or degree in one of the fields of study noted below. The CTAA Open Scholarship is available to both undergraduate and graduate students. The CTAA Industry Scholarship is restricted to undergraduate students. Students with industrial experience in asphalt technology are encouraged to apply for this scholarship.

Fields of Study:

In order to be eligible for consideration, the applicant must be formally enrolled in a diploma or degree program, which contributes to advances in any facet of asphalt technology. Eligible fields of study include chemistry, chemical engineering, construction engineering, and civil engineering. Other areas of study may be considered provided the applicant clearly notes the relevance of his/her curriculum towards asphalt technology.

Stipend:

Awards of $2,000 for the CTAA Open Scholarship and $1,000 for the CTAA Industry Scholarship award will be made directly to the recipient upon selection by CTAA.

Application Process:

In order to be considered for the annual CTAA Scholarships the following materials must be received by the CTAA office no later than July 1st. Information received after this deadline will not be considered in the scholarship review process.

  1. Completed scholarship form and indicate the applicable scholarship(s);
  2. Applicant's resume;
  3. Current academic transcripts;
  4. Applicant's statement (500 words or less) as to why he/she should receive the CTAA Scholarship.
  5. Three reference letters as noted below:
    1. A letter of reference from the applicant's program advisor.
    2. Two reference letters, preferably from CTAA members, or from individuals knowledgeable in the technical/academic qualifications of the applicant.

The letters must be sent directly to the CTAA office.

Selection Process:

The schedule shown below will be followed for the award selection process:

  1. July 1st- Completed application form and all supporting information received at CTAA office.
  2. July 1st to August 1st - Applications reviewed by CTAA Board of Directors.
  3. August 15th - Selection of recipients and formal notification by CTAA.

Recipient Requirements:

On being selected for a CTAA Scholarship, the recipient is expected to send a letter of acknowledgement to CTAA Head Office with a brief description of the studies the funds will help support.
